City of Marcos Juárez
Marcos Juárez, Argentina, October 2003

Project: Civic Intervention (Marcos Juárez)
Challenge: How to improve the city's Waste Management System
Location: Marcos Juárez, Argentina
Date: October 24-25, 2003
Local Contact: Norma Garcia Alloco Status: Ongoing
FWB team: Mari Gonzalez, David Gonzalez

Marcus Juárez is a small city of 30,000 inhabitants in the southeast of Cordoba province, located in the center of Argentina. It is a city well balanced on socio-economical levels. However, there is a need to enhance local, city and state governmental operating structures. Specifically, there is a need to change the way citizens handle their waste disposal. Local government wishes to develop a solid waste management plan to encourage waste reduction and recycling.

Both objectives were realized with accuracy. Session participants were enthusiastic about the tools they experienced (process, concepts, communication strategies, group work, etc.). A powerful side benefit that was noted by all participants is their excitement to apply their newfound learnings in their private businesses, within the community and in their personal lives. Participants left the session feeling that they could act as 'multipliers' of this new knowledge/technology. Participants have expressed how radical this has been for them and that their heads have been opened and exposed to concepts that have already begun to help them. As facilitators, you can imagine, we're tickled pink with the news of such impact.

The group has officially invited FWB back to help them tackle other initiatives and they hope to include another diverse group from the city. They were extremely appreciative of FWB and the time, energy and financial support that had been offered to Marcos Juárez. They felt privileged to be armed with such powerful tools and knowledge.
