Hudson Guild Chelsea Neighborhood Project
New York USA, December 2004

Project: Hudson Guild Chelsea Neighborhood Project (New York USA)
Challenge: How to cross-market their various social services programs?
Location: New York USA
Date: December 2004
Client Contact: Paul Groncki
FWB team: Tim Hurson, John Sedgwick

In December 2004, Facilitators Without Borders conducted a Productive Thinking Lab with Hudson Guild, a 100+ year-old settlement house in New York City.

The initial challenge was to help Hudson Guild figure out how to cross-market their various social services programs so that, for example, family members of participants in one program could be attracted to and participate in other programs. As the challenge was explored, however, it became clear that while program quality at Hudson Guild was generally high, staff in any given program were reticent to make referrals as they did not know enough about other programs and did not have the comfort level needed to refer participants to other programs. The new challenge became one of improving internal communications at the Guild.

In a lively idea generation session, the team generated almost 200 ideas. These ideas converged around improving communications by sharing stories and sharing information through the establishment of an internal ambassador program. An implementation plan was built and the team began implementing a comprehensive ambassador program for Hudson Guild upon returning to their site.
