Challenge: to build on the success of World AIDS Orphans Day (May 7)
Location: Paris, France
Date: November 2005
Client Contact: Christine Eggs, Director, World AIDS Orphans Day, and Communication for Europe
FWB team: Tim Hurson, Franca Leeson, Maggie Dugan, Tim Dunne

On November 7 and 8, 2005, FWB held a productive thinking workshop in Paris to help FXB (Association François-Xavier Bagnoud) build on the success of its World AIDS Orphans Day program (WAOD). The initial objectives of the session were to generate ideas to help:

  • Transform World AIDS Orphans Day into a truly worldwide movement, involving more cities and more people
  • Differentiate FXB as the creator of World AIDS Orphans Day and the primary organization serving the needs of children orphaned by AIDS
  • Increase funding opportunities
  • Increase credibility with, and participation of, national and local governments worldwide

FXB has been a leading innovator and pioneer in the fight against HIV/AIDS and the formulation of low-cost solutions to care for those infected and affected by the virus. FXB works with the conviction that the inextricable link between Health and Human Rights is a key to sustainable development.

FXB reached 1.4 million persons in 17 countries in 2003, through 87 programs. Although World AIDS Orphans Day is just one manifestation of FXB's wide-ranging activities all over the world, it was chosen as a focus of this FWB session as it can serve as a key focus to promote FXB's activities in order to generate awareness, interest, funding, and alliances.

Workshop participants included four FXB staff members, two "trained-brain" volunteers, and two FWB facilitators. The outcome of the session was more than 200 new ideas for possible ways to promote World AIDS Orphans Day (May 7). From this a short list of 10 ideas was chosen, two of which were further developed for implementation.

FXB Director Christine Eggs wrote, "Thank you for this seminar which helped us get our act together and to clearly see the opportunities available to us for World AIDS Orphans Day. In any case, those two days were very rewarding." Watch the FXB Website (www.fxb.org) for information on World AIDS Orphans Day!
